Migrating and Upgrading to Joomla! 5.x • Re: A migrating from J3.10 to J4/J5... Should I stop at J4?

Worth noting that the backwards compatibility plugin that comes with J4 & J5 means that extensions that work on J4 “should” work on J5 too. My own personal experience is that they do.

I’m gradually updating to extensions to versions that work on J5 without the plugin as they are released. Almost there now.

I found that the J3 —> J4 migration was the big one, and J4 —> J5 was painless and straightforward once everything on J4 was working and as I’d wish. It took a server/hosting move though, due to the database requirements of J5.

As Leolam says, use the J3 —> J4 migration to review the extensions that you use. I’ve found that there was nearly always an (often better) alternative available.

Good luck.
